Wedding Inspo - First Look Alternatives

It’s no secret that our little team is downright obsessed with wedding day first looks, but what about the couples who chose to go the more traditional route and wait to see each other until the ceremony? Well, some of our amazing brides and grooms have been inspired to share moments with each other pre-ceremony without ever setting eyes on their future spouses! We’ve looked back at some of our favorite alternatives for first looks that are just as magical and tender.

While there are a ton of different ways to send your future spouse a little extra love on your big day, some of our couples went above and beyond the usual. Ruidoso lovers Patrick and Niki opted for a “first prayer” together in a little corner of their venue and trust us when we say that everyone present was in tears as these two held hands and said the sweetest prayers for their marriage. On the flip side, our babes Dillon and Stephanie decided to go with a “first toast” where, standing back to back, they raised their glasses to their new life together and sipped on a little bit of liquid courage before their ceremony. Meanwhile, Albuquerque lovers Kaya and Matthew as well as Crystal and Amy both opted to hold hands while hidden around corners for the perfect “first touch” moment.

And these incredible little moments are just the tip of the iceberg for first look alternatives, We’ve had so many other couples send each other touching wedding day notes and gifts that always remind us of how important the little things can be on such big days.

All in all, we’re big fans of couples taking the time to add just an extra ounce of love into their wedding days! We treasure getting to capture these little details and trust us when we say, moments like this are definitely some of our favorite parts of our crazy little job!!!

ALP Team Picks - Ashley's Fave Weddings

Our gal Ashley captures a big portion of our team’s weddings as a lead photographer and 2019 was extra special for her! Beyond just Albuquerque and Santa Fe weddings, she traveled to Southern New Mexico (twice!) for some of the most stunning days we’ve ever seen. These incredible, colorful days with some of the best couples were some of our favorite moments of last year!

Ashley:
”When Jaclyn asked us to send over our favorite 2019 weddings, my first thought was “can I just choose all of them?!” I truly treasure each and every wedding I had the privilege of photographing in 2019. Each had its own unique magic that I’ll keep with me forever! Sadly, I can’t take up the next month of blog posts with my favorite weddings!

Clara and Trey’s wedding was my first of the season and what a way to begin it! I remember driving into San Patricio, NM that morning and pulling up at the location where we were supposed to meet for bridal prep. This place, guys, I can’t even begin to describe this treasure of a spot but I was blown away! We ended up doing a bridesmaid first look and I got to be the one to help Clara get into her wedding dress which is a memory I will treasure! The emotion and love in the air during their outdoor ceremony was palpable. Trey’s reaction to Clara walking down the aisle will stay in my list of favorite images forever. We then got to sneak back to the little secret garden of a location for romantics and guys! I can’t even stress how important it is to carve out a good chunk of time for bride and groom portraits. We had so much fun and got such a variety of mindblowing images and Clara and Trey got time to just breathe and enjoy their first hour of being Mr. and Mrs. Correa. I still dream about that greenhouse, the gazebo and all the amazing walls and doors. This perfect day was topped off with the sweetest first dances and toasts under a stunning white tent on a beautiful April day.

Nikki and Patrick’s day was what photographer dreams are made of! The details and the venue were out of this world (hello Louboutins ,amazing florals and an insanely beautifully decorated barn). I could spend an entire post just talking about these details! Can you please please look at the cake also? On top of these amazing touches was a couple that was seriously so beyond sweet and yet had so much passion as well. I was brought to tears multiple times during the day, starting with first look with dad and a prayer between Nikki and Patrick. We didn’t have to go far to get the prettiest light for bridal party pictures and romantics. Nikki in her amazing denim bridal jacket will remain one of my favorite bridal images ever. Everyone knew how to party at their reception and Nikki and Patrick really went for it with their cake cutting. Or do we call it a cake smash? I left that night with the biggest smile on my face, feeling lighter and happier after knowing these two!

I first got to meet Mattie and Morgan at their beautiful rehearsal dinner and instantly loved them both. Both of them so down to earth and go with the flow. That entire weekend just flew by without one stressful moment! Just the details at the rehearsal dinner made me so excited for what the next day would bring and I was far from disappointed. I walked in to Mattie’s parents breathtaking home to see all of Mattie’s bridesmaids (as well as her Mother and Mother-In-Law) clothed in these beautiful embroidered Mexican day dresses. They were all so relaxed, just sitting around watching chick flicks and enjoying each other's company. We then got to have first looks with Mattie’s dad, her bridesmaids and finally with Morgan. When we made it to the venue for the ceremony, I was speechless. I need you to look at these florals. All of them. The most stunning variety of florals I have ever witnessed. We had such beautiful weather for their outdoor ceremony and reception, followed by some of the prettiest golden hour romantics. The tequila donkey kicked off the beginning to one of the most fun-filled, lively receptions I’ve ever gotten to attend.”

Wedding Inspo - First Look Moments

One of the biggest decisions to be made for your wedding is whether or not to do a first look, and if you know one thing about our gang its that we ADORE first looks!

The biggest bonus, besides being able to shake off some of the pre-ceremony jitters, is that with a first look you and your hunny get even more time alone together on your wedding day (something that is surprisingly hard to get on the biggest day of your lives!). In addition to extra time, you get a few special, quiet moments together to take in how gorgeous/handsome your future spouse looks without anyone else around (except for us of course!). Although some might argue that seeing each other before walking down the aisle takes away from emotional reactions, we couldn’t disagree more. In fact, first looks just add to that magic because you get to experience seeing your lover in front of all of your friends and family too!

There’s also the major plus of getting extra photos together during and after a first look! And who doesn’t want even more gorgeous wedding photos without having to stress about squeezing in all of the romantics into the day after the ceremony? And with a first look you can also get wedding party and family photos done which means that everyone gets to enjoy alllll of cocktail hour!

We could seriously list off five million reasons why first looks are amazing, but we’ll let all of our couples in this special post do the talking for us!

Nestled high above Santa Fe in the pretty New Mexican mountain lies one of our favorite venues, Four Seasons Santa Fe. Even though we don’t get to visit for leisure often, it is always such a treat to capture our couples and their special days. Decked out with simple, but beautiful decor, this venue can literally be transformed for every wedding, from minimalist and modern styles to the biggest boho designs. Ashwin + Lauren, a Hindu Wedding Celebration at La Posada de Santa Fe

Following the absolutely stunning traditional Catholic wedding in downtown Santa Fe, Ashwin and Lauren kept the celebration going with a Baraat, a Hindu wedding ceremony in which the groom travels on a white horse with a parade of family and friends to the wedding venue where the bride and her family awaits. We were so excited to capture this incredibly unique, yet beautiful tradition.

Ashwin kicked off the day in Cathedral Park, the garden area surrounding the Cathedral Basilica of St Francis of Assisi where he had celebrated part one of his marriage the day before, just as the sun was rising in Santa Fe. Once his white horse (named Gandalf!) arrived, Ashwin led a parade of his friends and family up the street to La Posada de Santa Fe, where Lauren and her family was waiting for him. After greeting Lauren’s parents at La Posada, Ashwin and the other guests were lead inside where a gorgeous mandap adorned with florals had been whipped up just for this day. Even though the ceremony is longer than most church weddings, the intricate traditions of it are beyond amazing to witness.

During the ceremony, the bride’s parents give away their daughter for marriage and floral garlands are exchanged between bride and groom to symbolize their acceptance of one another. Our dream bride Lauren started the day off in a gorgeous blue and purple sari (to symbolize her mother) and then changed into a vibrant red and organge sari (to represent her new husband’s family). After the ceremony, all of the guests were invited to the prettiest brunch and we got to spend just a little more time with these lovers. We loved that nearly every single person wore traditional Hindu saris or other colorful attire and to be honest, we’re OBSESSED with all of the bright, stunning colors. After this weekend, we wish that every single couple could have a two day long wedding weekend with all of the downright stunning traditions.

Cheers to this couple and their one-ofa-kind wedding celebration! SO grateful for sweet souls like Lauren and Ashwin, we loved celebrating this genuine, unforgettable love story!

Adam + Jill, a Los Poblanos Wedding

Adam and Jill, two lovers that we can’t say enough sweet things about, made it last name official early this past August at Los Poblanos in the heart of the Albuquerque North Valley. We are so grateful for these two and their open, kind hearts who rolled with the tides on their wedding day!

Adam and Jill met through mutual friends after Jill moved to New Mexico from Chicago and after their first date, they knew it was meant to be! Adam proposed to Jill on vacation in Chicago and the rest was history!

On their wedding day it rained, it poured, and then it rained some more, but despite the change of plans Adam and Jill made the day about their love story and their loved ones! Along with her gorgeous Pronovias gown and sweet Kate Spade Keds, Jill’s details were so simple and elegant, yet sooo fun. We adored their framed, glass signage and all of the subtle purple accents these lovers tucked into their day. And can we just say that capturing they romantics was just a dream? We love seeing sweet souls who are so in love where nothing else matters come wedding day! Still over the moon about these two and their love for each other and their families. Congrats Mr. and Mrs. Harrington, we love you guys!!!

Garrett + April, a Casa Perea Wedding

Garrett + April’s sweet, intimate wedding at Casa Perea Art Space this summer was so incredibly special to us. We loved this day and their love story!

These lovers initially met while both working in New Mexico during a summer break (Garrett is from Minnesota and April is from Texas). They weren’t dating at the time, but they had an amazing time exploring the beautiful places and spaces across New Mexico. Three years later, these two decided to officially start dating and decided to make it a forever thing after two years of dating. Garrett loves April’s heart and how much she makes him smile (so cute!) while April adores Garrett for the way he cares about everyone in his life!

These two invited us to their late June wedding in the heart of Corrales for a day centered on family, friends, and Garrett + April’s love. From April’s dreamy Allure gown to Florecita’s precious bouquet to the fun little flower girls, every detail of this day was so personal and wonderful. Cheers to the sweetest lovers around!!

Qwist + Cara, a heartfelt wedding at Los Poblanos

We’ll never tire of reiterating how lucky we are to get to know the couples we capture, but every once in awhile, an out of this world love story comes along that not only knocks us off our feet, but also humbles us to be a part of it! Qwist and Cara’s 12 years in the making love story was just that and we’ll probably never, ever get over it.

Qwist and Cara met over a decade ago in Fort Collins, Colorado while attending an outdoor Common concert. They hit it off instantly when Qwist noticed Cara standing behind him and offered her a better view. They’ve been together ever since those first tender moments and Qwist proposed to Cara in the exact same spot they first met (followed by their families racing out with champagne to celebrate) *cue all the happy tears*.

These two had a heartfelt, genuine, downright beautiful wedding at our most favorite venue in town, Los Poblanos. Simplicity and minimalism not only ruled Qwist and Cara’s special day, but it allowed for their tender love story to shine through. From having Qwist’s grandmothers walk down the aisle as flower girls, to their group sing along of “Lean on Me” during the ceremony (never seen anything like that before, and it moved us to our core), to both the bride and groom including each sets of their parents during the mother/son and father/daughter dances, we can’t help but continually gush about how wildly special it was to witness this June wedding. Qwist and Cara share a love so tangible that it brings joy to everyone around them, thank you babes for letting us be a tiny part of this incredible love story!

Geoff + Jocelyn, a Rock House Engagement

Last month, we spent a golden hour evening with two of the most fun, light-hearted sweethearts around! Geoff and Jocelyn kept their Rock House engagement sooo carefree and fun that we couldn’t help but share a few of their silly moments alongside their breathtaking romantics on the blog!

These babes have been together for 4 years and met in the best way possible, while petting a dog at the same time. Geoff and Jocelyn like to to keep their relationship loving, supportive, and of course a little bit goofy! Not to mention they share a mutual love for ice cream.

We are over the moon to capture their Monday (!) wedding at Hacienda Dona Andrea this June. We can’t wait to be a part of their incredibly genuine, romantic, and downright fun love story!

Gustav + Jackie, a New Mexico Engagement

If there’s one thing we adore about engagements besides capturing gorgeous, wildly romantic moments, its when we get to hang out with fun loving, silly-in-love couples. These cuties met in 2013 when they were both working as camp counselors. One holiday season Jackie made a “detour” from Colorado to Oklahoma to see Gustav on her way to visit family in Texas and the rest is history. In the fall of 2018, Gustav proposed to Jackie during a deep woods camping trip in Colorado.

While these lovers are from different places (Gustav is from Gallup, NM and Jackie is from Durango, CO), they have shared love for the Southwest and especially for green Chile! They’ll be moving to Seattle with their cat Pockets where Gustav will attend law school and where Jackie will continue her career as a theater educator.

Gustav and Jackie’s wedding is set to be a rustic, fun, southwestern party this June! We can’t hardly wait to capture these lovebirds in our favorite little Albuquerque spot, Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Organic Farm!

James + Lauren, a Los Poblanos Engagement

Once the warm weather hit New Mexico, we knew exactly where we wanted to kick off some of our spring engagement sessions, the ever magical, completely beautiful Los Poblanos. James and Lauren, two of the most genuine little souls we know, wandered the grounds with us for a truly romantic, yet sweet engagement session. We still can’t get over Lauren’s absolutely stunning rose toned engagement ring!

These lovers met 10 years ago in high school, but didn’t reconnect and completely fall for each other until several years later. James and Lauren currently live in Arizona with their pup Gouda and their kitty Chamisa. These babes are also both teachers and according to Lauren, know how to not only support one another, but know exactly how to make their partner laugh.

We can’t wait for these desert lovers to make it official this July at Los Poblanos!

Tyler + Meredith, a Four Seasons Santa Fe Wedding

This past August we were so very thrilled to celebrate Tyler and Meredith’s sweet little Santa Fe soirée at Four Seasons Resort and Encantado!

These Colorado babes met five years ago through mutual friends in college and since then have shared a mutual love for road trips, fishing, Jimmy Buffet concerts, and (of course) sending each other pictures of dogs (making them official relationship goals). Meredith adores Tyler’s kind heart, goofiness, smarts, and easy going nature while Tyler loves how bubbly Meredith can be as well as her compassion and generosity.

Knowing that Santa Fe is one of Meredith’s favorite Southwestern cities, Tyler proposed to her in the middle of the historic Santa Fe Plaza under shimmering Christmas lights! We loved their modern, desert inspired day so incredibly much and adore these two even more!!

Michael + Lucia, a Los Poblanos Wedding

If there's one thing everyone knows about our team, it’s that weddings are always incredibly special to us, so getting to shoot the wedding of a close friend or family member reminds us of just how lucky we are to have this job!  Early this August, our girl Ashley captured the genuine love and incredible bond between Alicia's momma Lucia and her new husband Michael at the ever serene Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Organic Farm. Close friends and family gathered to watch these lovers not only become Mr and Mrs, but to witness just how incredible the power of love is at bringing true soulmates together. How amazing it is to see two people who belong so perfectly together find one another and, as Ashley mentioned, two people who "ooze love for each other".

Our wedding vendor soul sister Lauren Mestas of Just Lovely Weddings coordinated this beautiful day and we couldn't help but share her sweet thoughts on Lucia and Michael:

"Working with Lucia & Michael for wedding planning + design was so fun, because it gave me the chance to branch out and do something creatively that I haven’t really done before.  When I began by discussing colors and themes with Lucia, something that stood out to me was a photo of a wedding cake with a tree painted on it. Lucia described how she loves trees and nature, and from there I came up with a vision board to help us plan all of the wedding day details. We both loved the sage green combined with ivory, and lots of wood elements. The wood chargers were a small detail that went so far! Our amazing florist, Stephanie Yardman, really ran with the vision, and I loved the branches that she included in all of the arrangements. Los Poblanos was the perfect venue for Lucia & Michael to say "I Do!", and I am forever grateful that I got to work with such an amazing couple!"

Matthew + Kaya, a Paa-ko Ridge Wedding

In 2010, Matthew and Kaya met for the first time in Santa Rosa, California through a mutual friend and it was instantly love at first sight. These lovers found that they shared a passion for music, craft beer, and adventuring. Their love story continued as they moved from California to Nevada to Oregon while Kaya was still in college. They soon found their way to the ever charming Santa Fe, NM for new job opportunities and fell in love with the southwest’s breathtaking views and gorgeous sunsets. On a little trip back to Oregon in August of 2017, Matthew proposed at the beautiful Cannon Beach! Matthew and Kaya now live in our amazing state with their two cats Thor and Rollo and their sweet pup Kona, who made a guest appearance in their wedding!

We adored their late July wedding at Paa-ko Ridge Golf Club in Sandia Park, NM. Bringing lots of Southwestern flair, Kaya wore incredible cowboy boots under her classically elegant Casablanca Bridal gown and paired her entire look with a bold lipstick! To top off her amazing bridal details, Kaya included her grandmother’s vintage, hand-held mirror as her something old (giving us major feels). After their amazing little ceremony, these babes snuck off with us for some epic, on-the-edge-of-a-mountain romantics! We have so much love for these two and their adventurous souls, congrats babes!

Walker + Addie, a La Posada de Santa Fe Wedding

In June, we were beyond excited to capture Walker and Addie’s gorgeous, refined, yet wildly romantic wedding at one of our all time favorite locations, La Posada de Santa Fe. These Texas babes met by chance when Walker was first introduced to Addie’s father, Kevin through business connections and who low-key played match maker for his daughter by inviting Walker to Addie’s mother’s gym. It was only a matter of time before sparks flew between these two lovers and they achieved ultimate couple goals with their first unofficial date by meeting up for a casual walk with their dogs Quinn (Addie’s fur baby) and Clooney (Walker’s furry bff).  Soon after, they had their first official date, dinner and a surprise dance lesson,  and the rest is history.

Walker and Addie’s summer wedding was nothing short of an absolutely divine, natural, sage vision. From the amazing white rose adorned floral arch created by Renegade Floral, to Addie’s dreamy Pronovia’s gown paired with delicate lace up Francesco Russo heels, to including Quinn and Clooney in their special day, we had major heart eyes over these sweethearts. We adore you two so much!

Congrats to the Dillies on an unforgettable wedding and on expecting a little one early next year!
