Wedding Inspo - Wedding Planning Advice from Just Lovely Weddings

If there’s one thing we’ve learned so far in 2020, its to expect the unexpected and to embrace joy where we find it. Luckily for us, and for a ton of our couples, Lauren of Just Lovely Weddings and Darling Details Rentals has been an absolute angel in guiding everyone through it all.

This wedding coordinator queen gave us some insight on what couples are doing to still celebrate love during a pandemic, how to deal with planning a wedding/elopement in the face of uncertainty, and what to expect in the future of weddings!

Alicia Lucia Photography: Long before 2020 and all of its challenges, how did Just Lovely Weddings and Darling Details Rentals come to be?

Just Lovely: I got started with events in 2012, when I worked as a catering manager for a small hotel. I had a series of similar roles in the industry until early 2015, when I started Just Lovely and took on my first wedding that summer. It’s crazy to think that 2020 would’ve been/is my 6th season as an independent wedding planner & coordinator. Near the end of 2016 an industry colleague asked me if I wanted to take over Darling Details, and I have been working to grow our rental collection since then. I’ve loved being a part of so many special days, sometimes for both Just Lovely & Darling Details, and sometimes for just one or the other.

ALP: With the major shifts of 2020, what are more and more weddings starting to look like?

JL: Every wedding is different, and the needs of each couple reflects that. None of us wanted this to happen, and it’s just terrible for everyone. I am so grateful that most of our clients have decided to postpone, but I also get why some couldn’t. A lot of couples have decided to elope this year and have a party later on when they feel it’s safe. Some have decided to downsize significantly and have very intimate ceremonies and go to dinner after. The best decision right now is the one that feels most comfortable to the couple.

ALP: How is Just Lovely changing and pivoting during this time?

JL: My biggest goal in all of this has been to show up for our affected clients, providing advice and basically just guiding them through this challenging situation and showing them that they aren’t alone. We’ve helped them move dates and also transition to elopements. This is new territory for all of us and I am grateful to be in a position where I can guide my couples on the best options for them.

ALP: How should/can couples plan a wedding during a pandemic?

JL: My advice is to trust your feelings. Planning right now is a challenge due to uncertainty, so if you’re starting to feel stressed or anxious about your date (and if gatherings will be allowed then) start to consider a backup plan and discuss options with your vendors. Also, the wedding industry has taken such a hit, so try to be patient with your vendors. Most of us are in this industry because it’s where our hearts are, and our lives have been turned upside down. Any grace that we’re shown is appreciated even more right now.

ALP: How do you think this is going to change the industry?

JL: With only smaller celebrations being allowed, many couples have had to transition to more intimate gatherings than they would’ve originally considered. I think that this shift has started to show couples that, truly, all that’s needed to get married is a couple of witnesses and an officiant. Everything else should be fun, so hopefully this will alleviate some of the pressure to plan in the future, and help guide couples to plan events that are meaningful to them.

ALP: What has been the hardest part of this pandemic for your business? And, conversely, what has been the most rewarding part for Just Lovely?

JL: The hardest part has been our hearts breaking for our couples whose plans changed overnight; they had to make some really tough decisions, but at the end of the day I think they all did what was best for them and their guests. The second hardest part has been losing the majority of our income for the year, for both businesses, while expenses did not change.

The most rewarding part has been seeing the value of what a planner does, and how much we can truly help the couples we work with. Also, forcing myself to consider different sources of revenue and opportunities will make the businesses stronger in the long run.

ALP: What are your goals for Just Lovely past this pandemic and into the future?

JL: My goal past the pandemic is to continue to show up for our couples. I have been thinking a lot about how I can provide more resources and more value, and have been working on new processes and content to be able to do that. In the future, I would also love to get into planning more corporate events as well!

ALP: Finally what do you miss the most about big weddings? And what do you love the most about little weddings?

JL: I love weddings of all sizes! What I miss most about weddings in general is seeing the love and friendship that surrounds a couple on their wedding day - that’s what is most important. I feel like there has been this pressure to live up to this standard of weddings that was exhausting for everyone. I hope that at the end of this we all just remember that weddings are celebrations, and they’re meant to be fun and filled with love.

Wedding Inspo - Wedding Reception Centerpieces

One look at any of our social media sites and you’ll know how obsessed our little team is with florals, but we’re also in love with how our couples, planners, and florists design and create floral centerpieces. Bright, bold, and larger than life summer florals give us just as much joy as the the simple, subdued succulent adorned centerpieces. Brian + Ashley, an Eldorado Hotel Wedding

To finish off our crazy, wonderful September full of lovely weddings, we captured Brian and Ashley’s gorgeous, elegant wedding at Eldorado Hotel and Spa right off of the historic Santa Fe Plaza.

Brian and Ashley met in 2012 through mutual friends, however, sparks didn’t fly until they reunited in 2015 for their first official first date. When Ashley began to have severe health problems that would eventually lead to a major surgery and her missing out on the holidays with her family, Brian stayed by her side throughout it all. One year later, Brian wanted Ashley to have a huge reason to celebrate the holidays and not think about the stressful events of the previous year, so he proposed to her on Thanksgiving day in front of both of their families.

Fast forward to 2018 and these lovers started off their celebration with a sweet ceremony in Eldorado’s La Capilla de Oro, a modern, yet insanely ethereal chapel and even had Ashley’s mom sing and play guitar for it. Ashley’s dreamy ballgown, Brian’s reaction to her walking down the aisle, and, of course, their sweet pups Bear and Bailey had us feeling all of the true love, low-key fairytale feels. After a few dreamy golden hour romantics and a cocktail hour complete with a mariachi band, Brian and Ashley partied with all of their friends and family on Eldorado’s rooftop and wrapped up the night with a joyous sparkler send off. Congrats to the Pereas, we loved your enchanting fall wedding!

Michael + Lucia, a Los Poblanos Wedding

If there's one thing everyone knows about our team, it’s that weddings are always incredibly special to us, so getting to shoot the wedding of a close friend or family member reminds us of just how lucky we are to have this job!  Early this August, our girl Ashley captured the genuine love and incredible bond between Alicia's momma Lucia and her new husband Michael at the ever serene Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Organic Farm. Close friends and family gathered to watch these lovers not only become Mr and Mrs, but to witness just how incredible the power of love is at bringing true soulmates together. How amazing it is to see two people who belong so perfectly together find one another and, as Ashley mentioned, two people who "ooze love for each other".

Our wedding vendor soul sister Lauren Mestas of Just Lovely Weddings coordinated this beautiful day and we couldn't help but share her sweet thoughts on Lucia and Michael:

"Working with Lucia & Michael for wedding planning + design was so fun, because it gave me the chance to branch out and do something creatively that I haven’t really done before.  When I began by discussing colors and themes with Lucia, something that stood out to me was a photo of a wedding cake with a tree painted on it. Lucia described how she loves trees and nature, and from there I came up with a vision board to help us plan all of the wedding day details. We both loved the sage green combined with ivory, and lots of wood elements. The wood chargers were a small detail that went so far! Our amazing florist, Stephanie Yardman, really ran with the vision, and I loved the branches that she included in all of the arrangements. Los Poblanos was the perfect venue for Lucia & Michael to say "I Do!", and I am forever grateful that I got to work with such an amazing couple!"

Amy + Crystal, a Los Poblanos Wedding

Once in a while we are lucky enough to come across love stories that defy all odds and that truly make us believe in the power of love. Last year Crystal and Amy's story was just that and it was a story that defied the odds. These two beauties met by chance at a mutual friend's party in Denver, CO despite the fact that they were both living in Albuquerque, NM at the time.  Amy and Crystal both had the same lingering feeling, a pull that could only be fate bringing them together. Eventually, after being together for a little over a year, even after Amy had been relocated to Tucson, AZ due to her job in the United States Air Force, Amy proposed to Crystal during a gorgeous summer sunset in the desert.  And Crystal, of course, said yes!! They celebrated with an incredible fall wedding at Los Poblanos last year with moody florals, a beyond cool wedding party, and the dreamiest wedding gown (that Crystal worn like an absolute queen).

This couple's love story was featured on Love Inc and we couldn't help but gush over these lovers' words about one another. Crystal even mentioned that she just knew Amy was her soulmate after seeing her laugh and hearing her voice for the first time. We're so beyond lucky to photograph so many amazing couples in our gorgeous home state of New Mexico, and Amy + Crystal were a wonderful, subtle reminder that true love is out there, you only need to have an open heart.

Shane + Megan, a Dreamy New Mexico Wedding

In one of our dreamiest weddings to date, Shane and Megan vowed to love and cherish one another for the rest of their lives surrounded by family and friends at the breathtakingly beautiful Tinnin residence in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The couple met six and a half years ago, but Shane knew instantly that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Megan. Their vows pulled on our heartstrings during an incredibly emotional ceremony and both Megan's father and sister gave toasts that brought the entire room to tears.  In honor of her late mother, Megan's father gifted her one of her mother's gorgeous diamond rings to wear as her 'something old' and 'something blue'.  In addition to all of their heartfelt, deeply moving moments, Shane and Megan also incorporated some stunning details into their larger-than -life, truly incredible wedding. From florals with a hint of a tropical edge to an amazing dessert bar to a garter toss complete with a football (as a nod to Shane's life as a quarterback), this couple pulled out all of the stops to celebrate the next chapter of their lives! We were so honored to capture all of the laughs, tears, and love from this unforgettable day.
