Curtis + Elena, a Stellar Colorado Engagement

Longtime lovers Curtis and Elena might be from New Mexico, but they invited us up to our sister state Colorado for their super gorgeous engagement session in Loveland Pass. These angels truly made this dreamy October day even more stunning.

These babes first met over 15 years ago while both attending high school in Las Cruces, NM. They officially became friends two years later while on a band trip and eventually their friendship blossomed into love. Even though they separated for a short time when Curtis moved to Albuquerque to pursue a degree at The University of New Mexico, they soon reunited when Elena also made the move up north and they’ve been inseparable ever since. Soon after graduating from UNM, these cuties moved to Denver where Elena is completing her residency at The University of Colorado and Curtis is working as a city planner. They love cooking, exploring colorful Colorado, and hanging out with their fur baby Hugo!

Curtis and Elena are going to make it official this September with a Southwestern inspired day at La Fonda on the Plaza and we just know its going to be as remarkable as they are. Cheers to over a decade of love cuties!

Wedding Inspo - Top 5 Santa Fe Wedding Venues

Being from the gorgeous state of New Mexico, we spend a whole lot of time in our beautiful capital city of Santa Fe. We picked our top five places to tie the knot in The City Different and, dang, are they dreamy.

From the adobe-adorned plaza to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to way out in the desert, there are so many uniquely stunning places to say “I do” in and around Santa Fe. We adore spending time at La Fonda on the Plaza and La Posada de Santa Fe, both of which are located right near the heart of the city and have the most divine, historic architecture. We’re also head-over-heels for all the venues out in the wilds of New Mexico. From Georgia O’Keeffe’s beloved gem Ghost Ranch to the the hidden mountain beauty of Four Seasons Santa Santa Fe to the eclectic, wildly unique vibes of Hacienda Doña Andrea, couples have a plethora of ethereal, Southwestern spots to make it last name official.

We’re obsessed with all the incredible celebrations we’ve captured at these stellar venues and can’t wait to witness even more love and magic at them soon!

Caleb + Erin, an Enchanting Desert Engagement

In the middle of last fall, we got to hang out with long-time sweethearts Caleb and Erin on one of the gorgeous evenings of all. We adored soaking up every last second with these Nebraska cuties and hearing all about their amazing little journey together.

Even though Caleb and Erin sort-of knew each other in college, they didn’t officially meet until after graduation when they were both out on the town with mutual friends. Caleb immediately caught Erin’s eye and after a few drinks (and some shameless flirting), Erin made her move with a kiss at closing time (we LOVE this power move). And the next day, Caleb texted Erin thus beginning their wonderful little love story.

About four years and two dogs later, Caleb proposed during a hike in Albuquerque in the middle of March 2020. Erin said yes, but had to journey back home to Nebraska where she was still living at the time. However, these two didn’t get to see each for ten whole weeks when everything completely shut down due to the pandemic. After weathering some of the worst of 2020, these two officially made Albuquerque their home and started planning their next chapter together.

We can’t wait for Caleb and Erin’s beautiful Hacienda Doña Andrea wedding this fall, cheers to these cuties and to going the distance for love!

2020 - Moments with Alicia Lucia Photography

2020 was by far one of the most challenging years our team has ever faced, yet through all the difficult descisons and make-or-break moments, we still found the light on the other side of it all.

After an intense global pandemic forced our weddings and shoots to a screeching halt, we weren’t sure what to do, but somehow we found a new path and gained a better perspective on our lives, our business, and our community. We found new ways to capture weddings/elopements and support our couples as they navigated this insane year. And we also found even more opportunities to create beauty through styled shoots and portrait sessions. If one thing is sure, 2020 reminded us of why we set out to do what we do in the first place: love. Watching love win over and over and over again this year, despite all of the odds was something to behold. And we once again fell in love with with what we have the immense privilege of doing, capturing those undeniably beautiful moments of pure joy.

The biggest thank you from the bottom of our hearts goes out to every single couple, family, and individual who continually put their trust in us during a year where everything was uncertain, yet everything mattered even more. And to all of our vendor friends, thank you for riding this one out with us, we’ve never had so much faith in the wedding community as we do right here and now.

No year will ever be quite like 2020, and while we’re grateful to see beacons of hope at start of the new year, we’re forever be grateful for the year that gave us all a chance to start anew and to believe in the magic that is love.

Wedding Inspo - Intimate Weddings Part II

Earlier this year we posted a blog about some of our favorite intimate wedding inspiration, but after about a dozen more tiny weddings just in the past few months, we decided to make a part two!

If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it a dozen times, we ADORE intimate weddings. Everything about these little weddings is absolute perfection, from being able to spend more time with your guests to having a less limited budget due to overall lower costs to even just being able to enjoy more moments soaking up those first few hours of marriage. Over the past few months, we’ve been absolutely blown away by how our couples have taken intimate weddings to the next freaking level. Backyard weddings with all the pretty garden details, stoop weddings followed by mini parades, and the most adorable little farm weddings have just been the beginning of a whole new era of micro-weddings.

We’re not sure when giant weddings will be a consistent possibility in the coming months, but dang are we thankful for these beautiful, heartfelt, downright incredible intimate weddings. We can’t wait to share even more of these gorgeous days still to come!

Elopement Inspo - a 90s Romeo + Juliet Styled Elopement

We’ve spent a whole lot of time this year out in the deserts of New Mexico with our couples, so at the end of summer we decided to switch up our scenery a bit with one of the raddest elopement shoots we’ve ever done.

Inspired by Baz Luhrmann’s iconic 90s rendition of Romeo + Juliet (you know, the one with you Leo DiCaprio and Claire Danes), we created a little styled elopement with all of the romance, edge, and distinctive wedding style. We found a bunch of little gems in the heart of Downtown Albuquerque that had both that classic, romantic vibe along with those pops of color and one-of-a-kind features (especially the most perfect angel wing mural by our talented friend PAZ). We combined chic, simple bridal details including a sleek, modern Lulus gown and the dreamiest bridal glam by Santiago Romero and Betty Rose by Alanna alongside some truly unique touches such as an incredible white-floral groom’s top and that insanely colorful bouquet by Renegade Floral for an elopement look like we’ve never done before.

From zooming around to the coolest little locations to sneaking onto a rooftop to getting caught in a late-August rain, this evening truly felt like it was straight out of a film.

Tim + Noelle, a Rad Couples Session in the Desert

If you know anything about us, you know that we LOVE hanging with the raddest couples around and we love running around in the desert with them even more. Spending the most perfect evening with Tim and Noelle, the coolest lovers around, was literally how we’d want to spend every single week night forever.

These hot babes have been married for 2 years, but dang do they just give off those madly-in-love feels. They brought their killer style and downright unreal power couple vibes to one of our fave spots, so yeah, we’re just a little obsessed. If you’re looking for married couple inspo, just take a glance at these two because Tim and Noelle only have eyes for each other and wow is it truly captivating to see.

So grateful to have crossed paths with these two for most crazy beautiful session in NM. Hey Tim and Noelle, we’re gonna need to make some more magic with you guys real soon!

On the Oregon Coast, Magical Elopements on Cannon Beach

Once in awhile we get to journey to some of the most magical places in the universe and our trip to the Oregon Coast was beyond our wildest dreams. We got to hang with not one, but two insanely beautiful couples and lets just say it was next-freaking-level.

For these two styled elopements, we traveled to Cannon Beach, aka heaven, for an absolutely dazzling day created by our sweet friend Taylor of Traveling Weddings with Taylor. That misty coastline made for easily one of the most sublime backdrops we’ve ever beheld. Our couples, TJ + Maegan and Anthony + Bailey, were so captivating, we’re pretty sure every single photo of them was perfection. On top of having these outstandingly gorgeous lovers, dress queen Hannah Tikkanen created two immaculate gowns that we’re still 1000% smitten with and we’ll probably never get over them. From running on the beach, to dancing in the ocean, to sharing kisses under the Pacific Northwest sky, all of the love we witnessed was truly unforgettable.

And if all of that astonishing beauty wasn’t enough, the most remarkable team of Oregon vendors brought some impeccable elopement dreams to life. From Noble Florals’ heavenly bouquets to Sweet Sentimentality’s delicate invitation suite to Party Place Portland’s exquisite table design, every inch of this day was astonishing.

Cannon Beach, you have our hearts and we’re beyond obsessed with you. We can’t wait to be back at this ethereal place soon, but until then, we’ll be over here daydreaming about this unreal day.

Andrew + Shay, a Breezy Desert Engagement

Last month, we spent a windy little day out in the desert with Andrew + Shay and dang was it magical! These two lovers brought all the love and the giggles to their beyond beautiful engagement session.

In a true love-at-first-sight situation, Andrew and Shay met at a destination wedding in Mexico last November and after four magical days of walking on the beach, dancing, and getting to know each other, Andrew plucked up the courage to go after Shay’s heart against all odds (swoon!). He proved himself to be everything that Shay could have imagined, he is consistent, sweet, and family-oriented. And to Andrew, Shay is beautiful, kind, and driven. These two went the distance for each other and when we mean distance, we mean literally because these babes live 1,500 miles apart. After much time spent in a long distance relationship, these babes are ready to make it official and its going to be absolutely stunning!

They say when you meet your person you just know, and dang did Shay + Andrew KNOW that they were meant for each other. We can’t wait for their sweet, intimate, fall wedding in a matter of weeks!

Juliet, a Divine Styled Bridal Session

If there’s one thing more magical than a bridal session, its a New Mexico bridal session with that dark, yet gorgeous monsoon weather. We braved a tiny storm with Juliet, the loveliest little bride, for one of the prettiest evenings in the desert.

Our girl Alanna Garcia of Betty Rose by Alanna put together the most stunning styled bridal session and when she asked us to capture all of the beauty, we were over the moon! Our graceful Juliet glowed just a little extra thanks to Alanna’s beautiful makeup and Savannah’s elegant hair design (complete with the tiniest little floral details). Our sweet friend Darlene of Bridal Elegance by Darlene let us capture the most exquisite, romantic bridal gown, complete with removable sleeves and the lightest, most beautiful tulle fabric around. To top it all off, A Beautiful Theme created a truly otherworldly, moody bouquet that we’re still thinking about to this day.

We love love love getting to capture visions that our vendor friends dream up, we are so excited for all the beauty that’s still to come!!!

Wedding Inspo - Ceremony Altars

Whether its a mini-wedding with a handful of guests or a giant, incredibly lively wedding with a whole bunch of friends and family members, our couples always find a way to make their ceremonies extra gorgeous, especially when it comes to the backdrops they pick to stand in front of to say “I do”. From stunning floral installations to incredible ceremony arches, we’ve seen it all, but we love looking back at some of the most show-stopping ceremony set ups we’ve seen over the past year.

As expected, we captured a ton of floral arches, from the bright and bold to the soft and whimsical varieties. Arches, both of of the wooden variety and of the purely floral design are becoming a wedding staple that we’re sure will always be a fan fave.

But besides this new classic, what other beauties have adorned alters and made vows that much more special? There are a few pretty little designs that come to mind and wow, are we still drooling over them. Just a few of our current faves include a dreamy mauve-toned geometric backdrop, the most eye-catching florals being draped from a tiny balcony, and a boho rug framed with giant pampas grass arrangements. And, of course, we can’t forget how one of our couples opted for that wide open New Mexico sky to be their ceremony background as they exchanged vows at a backyard wedding in the Santa Fe mountains.

We’re not sure what new altar trends will take the wedding world by storm in the coming years, but we do know that they’ll be absolutely divines and we’re so dang here for it all.

Wedding Inspo - Wedding Planning Advice from Just Lovely Weddings

If there’s one thing we’ve learned so far in 2020, its to expect the unexpected and to embrace joy where we find it. Luckily for us, and for a ton of our couples, Lauren of Just Lovely Weddings and Darling Details Rentals has been an absolute angel in guiding everyone through it all.

This wedding coordinator queen gave us some insight on what couples are doing to still celebrate love during a pandemic, how to deal with planning a wedding/elopement in the face of uncertainty, and what to expect in the future of weddings!

Alicia Lucia Photography: Long before 2020 and all of its challenges, how did Just Lovely Weddings and Darling Details Rentals come to be?

Just Lovely: I got started with events in 2012, when I worked as a catering manager for a small hotel. I had a series of similar roles in the industry until early 2015, when I started Just Lovely and took on my first wedding that summer. It’s crazy to think that 2020 would’ve been/is my 6th season as an independent wedding planner & coordinator. Near the end of 2016 an industry colleague asked me if I wanted to take over Darling Details, and I have been working to grow our rental collection since then. I’ve loved being a part of so many special days, sometimes for both Just Lovely & Darling Details, and sometimes for just one or the other.

ALP: With the major shifts of 2020, what are more and more weddings starting to look like?

JL: Every wedding is different, and the needs of each couple reflects that. None of us wanted this to happen, and it’s just terrible for everyone. I am so grateful that most of our clients have decided to postpone, but I also get why some couldn’t. A lot of couples have decided to elope this year and have a party later on when they feel it’s safe. Some have decided to downsize significantly and have very intimate ceremonies and go to dinner after. The best decision right now is the one that feels most comfortable to the couple.

ALP: How is Just Lovely changing and pivoting during this time?

JL: My biggest goal in all of this has been to show up for our affected clients, providing advice and basically just guiding them through this challenging situation and showing them that they aren’t alone. We’ve helped them move dates and also transition to elopements. This is new territory for all of us and I am grateful to be in a position where I can guide my couples on the best options for them.

ALP: How should/can couples plan a wedding during a pandemic?

JL: My advice is to trust your feelings. Planning right now is a challenge due to uncertainty, so if you’re starting to feel stressed or anxious about your date (and if gatherings will be allowed then) start to consider a backup plan and discuss options with your vendors. Also, the wedding industry has taken such a hit, so try to be patient with your vendors. Most of us are in this industry because it’s where our hearts are, and our lives have been turned upside down. Any grace that we’re shown is appreciated even more right now.

ALP: How do you think this is going to change the industry?

JL: With only smaller celebrations being allowed, many couples have had to transition to more intimate gatherings than they would’ve originally considered. I think that this shift has started to show couples that, truly, all that’s needed to get married is a couple of witnesses and an officiant. Everything else should be fun, so hopefully this will alleviate some of the pressure to plan in the future, and help guide couples to plan events that are meaningful to them.

ALP: What has been the hardest part of this pandemic for your business? And, conversely, what has been the most rewarding part for Just Lovely?

JL: The hardest part has been our hearts breaking for our couples whose plans changed overnight; they had to make some really tough decisions, but at the end of the day I think they all did what was best for them and their guests. The second hardest part has been losing the majority of our income for the year, for both businesses, while expenses did not change.

The most rewarding part has been seeing the value of what a planner does, and how much we can truly help the couples we work with. Also, forcing myself to consider different sources of revenue and opportunities will make the businesses stronger in the long run.

ALP: What are your goals for Just Lovely past this pandemic and into the future?

JL: My goal past the pandemic is to continue to show up for our couples. I have been thinking a lot about how I can provide more resources and more value, and have been working on new processes and content to be able to do that. In the future, I would also love to get into planning more corporate events as well!

ALP: Finally what do you miss the most about big weddings? And what do you love the most about little weddings?

JL: I love weddings of all sizes! What I miss most about weddings in general is seeing the love and friendship that surrounds a couple on their wedding day - that’s what is most important. I feel like there has been this pressure to live up to this standard of weddings that was exhausting for everyone. I hope that at the end of this we all just remember that weddings are celebrations, and they’re meant to be fun and filled with love.

Just a few months ago we got to capture this sweet little mama-to-be in the middle of the desert. Even though those canyon winds came around, we still captured some of the sweetest moments!

Sheree, who is literally going to be the most stunning mom around, was a dream to capture. From her stellar outfits to that beautiful floral crown to her adorable pup, this session was such a special one.

Elopement Inspo - Romantic Dallas Elopement Sessions

Long before the madness of a pandemic took hold of the world, our gal Alicia traveled to Dallas, TX for a few of the most stunning styled elopements we’ve ever seen. Forever wishing we could just live in these absolute daydreams!

For the first session, we journeyed to The Olana, a seemingly real life castle, for a modern day fairytale. Two divine couples in the most beautiful bride and groom wedding styles were just the tip of the iceberg on this day. We loved getting to shoot with wedding planner extraordinaire Traveling Weddings with Taylor for this day!

And on our second day of shooting, we captured just a few sweet moments with some real life lovers at The Emerson venue, aka a tiny white chapel heaven. We loved the dreamy florals by Slow Darling and the absolute bridal beauty created by the glam queens at Hello Flawless Artistry. In a perfect world, every single day would look like this one!

We can’t wait to travel more and to capture even more beauty all over, cheers to all the pretty days ahead!

Maria, Ethereal Bridal Boudoir

Last month we spent a few hours in absolute bridal boudoir HEAVEN with one of the dreamiest vendor teams in the universe. It was everything we could have ever imagined, from ethereal lingerie to stunning glam, this summer day was beyond divine.

Although we don’t capture as much bridal boudoir as we’d like to, 2020 has given us the unique opportunity to tap into the smaller, more personal shoots we adore so much. One of our forever muses, Maria, once again graced the front of our cameras and it was beyond what we had daydreamed it would be.

Wearing the most elegant bridal lingerie by Terese Rose Designs, complete with a stunning slip and beautifully delicate robe, and glamed up by our queens Diana and Kata of Something Ginger, this bridal goddess made our vision come to life. We captured this incredibly lovely session at Casita de Cacti, an Airbnb hosted by Kata Baron, and even got to include some of the world’s most gorgeous florals by Floral Fetish. We can’t get over how that New Mexico sunshine came into the space so very softly, giving Maria that otherworldly, ethereal bridal glow we love so much.

We’re forever blown away by this day, its simplicity, and its out of this world beauty.

Wedding Inspo - Intimate Weddings

As 2020 progresses, it feels like there are different possibilities for weddings on a daily basis. And while big weddings, especially in New Mexico, might not be a reality for a little bit, we adore that intimate weddings are starting to become a bigger staple in the wedding industry.

For clarity, intimate weddings and elopements might seem similar, but they’re actually quite different. In a typical elopement, usually just the couple, the officiant, and the photographer are present. However, in an intimate wedding, usually both sets of parents of the couple, the officiant, a few close friends/family members, and the photographer are present. Sometimes, when there’s not a pandemic taking place, an intimate wedding can even look something like 15-45 guests, usually just a short list of the most important people in the couple’s life.

So far this year, we captured one of the sweetest intimate weddings here in Albuquerque at Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Organic Farm, but in the past we’ve captured a handful of tiny weddings that have filled our hearts with absolute joy. Some of the bonuses of intimate weddings aren’t just cost related (or in 2020’s case, health related), sometimes the best things about smaller weddings involved being able to spend quality time with pretty much every single guest. Another factor is even being able to allow moments of the day to feel less hectic such as making timelines that have less rushed portraits and ceremonies with smaller weddings parties (which means a lot less stress too).

While big weddings will someday be a possibility again, having intimate weddings in their place until we can all gather together safely again might just be the next best thing. Here’s to finding new ways to celebrate and never ever giving up on love, no matter what the universe throws our way!!

Christian + Kristal, a Santa Fe Desert Elopement

Right in the middle of a New Mexico monsoon season, these two lovers decided to elope out in the Santa Fe wilderness and all we can say is WOW. That incredibly moody sky paired with the most perfect desert terrain made for an epic backdrop on Christian and Kristal’s amazing day.

Opting for some of the most unique, and so freaking killer, wedding attire, these babes gave us elopement inspiration for years That light blue suit and floral tie combo on Christian alongside Kristal’s neutral toned, lace dress made for an incredible look. And we couldn’t forget about that bright bridal bouquet that gave the most perfect little pop of color on this overcast Southwest day.

Cheers to adventuring out through it all with some of the most beautiful, in love couples on the planet, we’re SO dang here for it! Congrats Christian and Kristal, we adored this special little evening with you both!!

Stuart + Kelly, an Intimate Wedding at Los Poblanos

2020 has proven to be year full of twists and turns, but amid the chaos, we’ve found little moments of joy with a handful of elopements and incredible lovers. Stuart and Kelly’s intimate wedding at Los Poblanos this June was such a highlight of this year, we loved every sweet little moment of this day.

Nearly four years ago Kelly and Stuart’s paths crossed for the very first, but certainly not the last, time while both living in Midland, Texas. While they both had an amazing time on their first date, Kelly was simultaneously traveling quite a bit for work and set on moving to Houston, so they eventually moved on from one another (even though Stuart took this as Kelly “ghosting” him). A few months later, Kelly found out that her work rotation in Midland was being extended for another 6 months, so she decided to reach out to Stuart and to her surprise, he decided to “ghost” her by not responding to her texts (a truly modern love story)! Kelly being resilient, and having that sixth sense that Stuart was still into her, didn’t give up, and eventually he caved and they met up for dinner. Ever since, these babes have been inseparable. Once Kelly’s work rotation was up, she opted to stay in Midland with Stuart instead of moving to Houston.

About 3 years later, while on a quick weekend trip to Santa Fe, Stuart proposed. Kelly had a hunch for a few months prior and expected to him to pop the question at Napa later in 2019, but Stuart had decided that The City Different would make the perfect to ask Kelly. On a freezing February evening, under string lights in the Plaza, Stuart proposed to Kelly in the same city where they had gone on their first trip together and spent their first Christmas together, truly a magical place that would forever be extra special for both of them.

Flash forward to 2020, Stuart and Kelly were set on having a gorgeous summer wedding at historic Los Poblanos here in Albuquerque, when COVID-19, aka the pandemic that literally no one asked for, hit around the globe. As June grew closer and more restrictions were put into place, these lovers eventually settled on an intimate wedding at the property with just their parents and two of their closest friends. And even though it was small, this day was beyond beautiful and for all the right reasons. Kelly had some of the dreamiest details including a Rue de Seine gown (that we can’t stop thinking about), a stunning bouquet by Floriography, and the most beautiful glam by some of our favorite hair and makeup angels (Betty Rose by Alanna and Diana of Something Ginger), but the one detail that really stood out to us was Kelly and Stuart’s love for one another. Kelly recalls walking down the aisle and realizing that it didn’t matter if there were a handful of guests or a hundred guests, all she could see in perfect clarity was Stuart smiling at her. Even though everything had changed, becoming husband and wife was all that really mattered to both of them.

After their heartfelt ceremony, we got to spend a little extra time with Stuart and Kelly, from seeing their first dance to John Adams’ cover of Taylor Swift’s “Lover” to roaming around Los Poblanos for the most beautiful romantics to finally capturing them walk into their sweet little dinner at El Campo.

Something that Kelly told us after their ceremony that hit home for us and for everyone trying to plan (and replan) weddings in the time of coronavirus is this, “ “It's very easy during the wedding planning process to forget what is really important; the marriage. At the end of the day, the wedding does not define who we are as husband and wife. Our process was so unique and forced us to problem solve and make very difficult decisions together. We learned how to compromise and understand what was truly important to each of us. The little things we thought at one point were so important, like the napkins or the table settings, didn't matter at the end of the day. We were just so blessed to be surrounded by our closest loved ones, and to be celebrating each other, those small things just became afterthoughts.”

There’s so much we could say about these two, from being so dang kind to rolling with all the punches of 2020 to literally becoming Instagram besties with us, we have so much love for Kelly and Stuart. We can’t wait to celebrate your love all over again in Texas!!!
